Through grant funding from the Baltimore Office of Planning Community Development Block Grant program, our staff members have been providing support to young children and their parents residing in shelter care in Baltimore County. This support includes staff development regarding young children and children with special needs for shelter staff and the provision of developmental and social emotional screenings for children as they come into shelter care. Resource and referral services are also provided in conjunction with the shelter staff and support for parents through the Child Find process is available. Each week parents are provided with small activity kits focused on social and emotional development for them to share with their children. The children are provided with a weekly social skills group while parents are in their own group meeting. Services to support families are available for up to 6 months once the family is re-housed.
